PREVENTION OF YOUTH TOBACCO USE ACT

On April 1, 2003 the provincial anti-smoking law came into effect. Minors (under the age of 18) are prohibited from possessing and using tobacco products in public places. Under the Act, anyone under the age of 18 found publicly using or in possession of tobacco products will be subject to a fine of $100 and/or seizure of the product. The Edmonton Police Service will investigate violations under the Act within the City of Edmonton.

As a result, the Edmonton Catholic School District has revised its District-wide Smoke-Free Environment Policy so that students (under the age of 18) cannot possess or use tobacco products on District property or property leased by the District.
